Ambition

If there’s one thing I’ve learned recently, it’s that having a goal in mind pushes your progress like nothing else. Don’t be the type who’s content with stagnation.

What do I mean? There’s nothing like having a goal, whether short term or long term to keep you moving in life.

I’ve experienced how my life, my hobbies, my passions all halt when I can’t figure out where I’m going. Of course, no one knows exactly what their future holds, but that’s not what I mean.

When you haven’t a clue what your next move is, you find yourself in this sort of weird limbo where you’re overwhelmed by nothing. Say you’ve just finished school. You haven’t a job nor a spouse. Your life is up in the air and you don’t know what to do next.

Now, that’s perfectly okay. But recognize when your limbo has overstayed its welcome. Research opportunities that you want to be a part of. Have a goal. Learn a language, teach abroad, obtain a graduate degree. And once you’ve met your goal? Find a new one.

This way, you see, your life will always be moving. You’ll always be making progress, developing as a person, and finding yourself having new and wonderful experiences.

Lastly, I’ve learned that when I have a clear goal to work towards, other areas of my life gain meaning. It all comes back. The motivation, inspiration. My hobbies organically regain their spark. Finding a purpose brings with it such a strong will to improve in other aspects of your life.

Works like a charm.

  1. This might seem like a silly question, but do recreational goals count? As of now, I don’t have any professional goals as I just achieved one. It’s taken a while to get to this point (almost two years), so I’m giving myself some time before I make more professional goals. I’m always changing my mind… So all the more reason to move a bit slowly 😉
